We've finally found
some time to actually write the letter about Summer

particularly for details of our plans for our
first ever go at Zorbing!
(And hydro Zorbing at that - if you're going to do something, you might as well get soaked doing it is our motto!)

Why the enumerated apartheid? The sharper amongst you will, naturally, realise that it is actually didascalic disassociation...
Or that the first list go to Tudor Grange. And the second list doesn't. And the relevance of this is that rumour has it that TG has an inset day on the Friday that we go to the Malvern Challenge - and we were planning to go down early to avoid camping in the Cotswold Gulag again anyhow.
So - how many of you TG people want to come down with us early? We'll be meeting at 11am, so you'll get almost another full day at the Malvern Challenge! Let us know by leaving a comment in our shiny new comments system...

Chase Walk Update
19/03/10 14:00
After last night's
somewhat late-in-the-day announcement* we've had to
change the teams, and several people now have new
walker numbers - which look like this:
The Fast Show
Team 87
Start Time 0726
Kit Check 0656
Three Lanky Gits with One Walking Boot
Team 75
Start Time 0714
Kit Check 0644
A JD for Williams for Weave
Team 63
Start Time 0702
Kit Check 0632
We're Getting There
Team 52
Start Time 0650
Kit Check 0620
Assuming that the technology is suitably waterproof (!), team progress will be available on the Chase Walk's website - and we'll also try and update our Twitter feed, too!
Cheers,
Andy
(*Seriously - why wait until Thursday to tell us that you can't go? I've spent hours over the last couple of weeks organising this - but, hey!, the rugby team's complained, so let's just give the Explorer Scout Leader something else to do - I'm sure that he's got some time in his schedule to reorganise the teams, redo all the paperwork, and contact the Chase Walk organisers to tell them that, sorry, need to redo the teams again as well as pack his stuff, do some actual work this morning, and everything else. Slightly annoying...)

Chase Walk Latest!
14/03/10 20:30
A few things for the
Chase Walk. If you need kit, let Andy know ASAP, else
you won't get it...
So far we've had requests off Hannah B, Alex M, Dan P, Tom P, Ollie W - and that's it. If your name's not down, you won't be borrowing any of our stuff...
We've also sent an email out - there's only one Activity Form required, not two. Blame Andy copying 'n' pasting information from Six Dales for that one!
Finally, there's also a sponsor form in the Documents section that we'd like people to consider - we're raising money for the following:

Shelterbox respond instantly to natural and manmade disasters by delivering boxes of aid to those who are most in need. Each box supplies an extended family of up to 10 people with a tent and essential equipment to use while they are displaced or homeless.
Shelterbox have so far sent over 7,000 boxes to Haiti, and are in the process of sending over 1,000 boxes to Chile. 50% of the money that we raise will go to Shelterbox, as it’s our supported charity for 2010.

“The Jamboree is a worldwide gathering of scouts all around the world which provides scouts with the opportunity to learn new life skills and gain new life changing experiences. I am hoping to learn a lot more about world culture and the many different ways that other Scouts live their day-to-day lives and how different it is compared to the ways that we live it.”
25% of the money that we raise will help fund Rhiannon and Scouts from developing countries to attend the 2011 Jamboree.

"Hi, I'm Dan and this July I'm heading to Tanzania with a group of 15 other teenagers from Alderbrook’s year 10 and 11 of last year. We are going to Tanzania to support schools and orphanages and also do a couple of treks along the way. To get there though, we each have to individually raise approximately £3,600 via fundraising events / sponsorships. So I'd be very grateful if you could help me in this fundraising by sponsoring us on the 40 mile walk and help me on my way. I'll bring plenty of pictures back showing the difference you've helped me make. Thankyou"

On Walking in the Dark
07/03/10 14:30
A quick note about the
Night Hike. Firstly - well done to all those who went
for, basically, surviving - 'cause it was,
officially, 'king freezing! Those that took the tent
for camping in the barn - sensible idea, undermined
slightly only by your complete inability to remember
that tent walls don't really stop sound too well...
However. But. Notwithstanding. And any other caveats that you wish to apply. It did show a slight lack of navigational capability. Like heading to Dorridge (East on one of those weird compass things), rather than Blythe Valley (West on one of those weird compass things). Not that important in the grand scheme of things for the Night Hike (other than we had the mickey taken out of us Quite A Lot). However. But. Notwithstanding...
We HAVE to be better prepared for the Chase Walk. We can't have people turning up without kit. Getting lost isn't going to be viable - there's a lot of Cannock Chase and we can't have people wandering around without a scooby as to where they are.
So - next Saturday (13 March) is a Chase Walk training event. It's as close as mandatory as we can make it for those that haven't been on the Chase Walk - put it this way, if we don't have a decent turn out from Teams 52 and 63 in particular then we will pull the teams out of the Chase Walk. We're meeting at HQ at 0930 and will return there for about 1900. We'll be travelling up to Cannock Chase, and could do with some of the more experienced Explorers there to help us as well please.

As revealed on a
Facebook near you, the teams for the Chase Walk look
like this:
The Fast Show

Stop Taking the P*ss - We're Getting There
Team 52
Start Time 0650
Kit Check 0620
During the event we'll be updating our Twitter feed, and the Chase Walk should be updating their website with team progress. Everyone will have a walker number - and that's the team number plus the letter shown above (so, for example, Jake will be 52A).
We've got some rubbish start times, which is unfortunate. On the plus side, though, this does mean that we get a little more time in bed! We're hopeful that everyone should have enough time to get as far as they can - good luck!

County Night Hike
22/02/10 19:00
Oops. Skiing /
snowboarding went REALLY well, and everyone had just
the most amazing time. However, it took a lot of
organising, and a combination of that and trying to
sort out the Chase Walk meant that we forgot to
organise the Night Hike. For which the closing date
was yesterday. As we said - oops.
However, we've been granted an extension (hurrah!). But only a brief one...
IF YOU WANT TO GO ON THE NIGHT HIKE YOU NEED TO COMPLETE THE ONLINE BOOKING BY WEDNESDAY NIGHT.
The Night Hike is Saturday night 06 March, with a pick-up from Four Ashes at around 8am Sunday 07 March. The route itself is 13 miles, and there's food provided. The cost's £5. There's also an Explorer Trophy, which we got close to winning last year - it would be nice to win it this year...
Talk to Andy if you've any questions.

World Scout Jamboree 2011
06/09/09 19:23
Those that were born
between 25 July 1993 and 27 July 2997 have only one
chance to go to World Scout Jamboree - and it's in
2011 in Sweden.
World Scout Jamborees come around every four years - and there are more countries represented at them than at the Olympics. They're an incredible experience - one that Andy, Nay, and 15 Explorers were fortunate enough to be able to experience in 2007. Read more about our experiences here - and do consider going. Seriously.
AND RETURN THE FORM OR EMAIL SOONER RATHER THAN LATER IF YOU WANT TO GO - THERE ARE ALREADY OVER THIRTY APPLICATIONS IN.

Summer Camp Gower
04/06/09 07:00
We're now in the
process of booking ferries for Summer Camp Guernsey,
so - if your name's not down for that, it's probably
a bit late. However, there are still some places left
on Summer Camp Gower - and remember, you can join us
for all or part of this!

We're based at Silvercross Scout Campsite (as with Guernsey it has showers and similar mod-cons..!). We've stayed there before and the warden, Andy, is a fantastic guy and contributes to the very laid back feel to the place.
Gower itself is a fantastic location for a Summer Camp, with an array of large and pretty much empty beaches on our doorstep. We haven't got as long as in Guernsey, and the budget's not quite as generous, but we're hoping to do some surfing and windsurfing, a ride in a powerboat, and a play with Power Kites. As well as all these, there'll be opportunities to have a play on the assault course on site for those that want to, and campfires stretching into the night...

Those that have been before will attest that it's a great place to go. The cost of the week is £120, pro-rated down for those that can only go for part of the week. The camp is from 22 - 29 August. Book online if you want to go!

Coming second in the The Boot Trophy (and only 8 minutes behind the winners!).
A massive congratulations to all who took part - everyone who attempted the walk this year completed it, which is a first, and we had a team complete in daylight, which threw some of our organisation into disarray somewhat (apologies to all who helped on the Checkpoint for the lack of fuel for the generator for an hour or so after it got dark - oops).
Congratulations also go to those members of Intrepid who took part in the junior Chase Walk (the winning team there had three members of Intrepid in!), those Scouts from Buckholt (who formed the rest of the winning team amongst others) and from Glyn who took part in the Junior Chase Walk (and who all completed it).
Also mentioned in dispatches need to be the teams who completed the Chase Walk from Drake ESU (one of whom came second in The Rock Trophy), from Mallory ESU, from Simpson ESU, and the Leaders Teams from Buckholt and 6th Shirley.
All told - a top weekend. Thanks guys.

There have been a
couple of ‘phone calls tonight about missing
booklets, so we’ve uploaded all the information
(including a kit list and Activity Form) to the
Documents section. There’s a copy of the Chase Walk
handbook itself on their website at
http://www.chasewalk.fsnet.co.uk/Chase%20Walk%202009%20Handbook.pdf.
See you tomorrow!
(PS - it’s going to be cold at night - make sure you’ve got a decent sleeping bag or bring two...)

Skiing!
18/01/09 20:30
Okay - you spoke, we
listened. Now we need you to act...
As a result of the interest expressed in skiing / boarding on Thursday, we’re proposing the following. We’ll travel up to Aviemore Saturday 14 February, and then ski / board Sunday thru’ Wednesday. We’ll travel down to the Lake District Thursday, arriving back in Solihull on the Friday (20 February). Same as before, except that there’s no “day off” in the middle.
And the cost? IF people have been skiing or snowboarding before, AND they can demonstrate a level of competence, then they won’t need instruction - and the cost will be £260. For those that will need instruction, the cost will be an additional £100 on top of that. Apologies - it’s an expensive business - but the cost does include transport, accommodation (in a Youth Hostel), food, ski / board hire, four day lift passes, so this is as cheap as we can realistically make it. If you have your own skis / board, let Andy know, and we’ll see if can reduce the price further.
There’s already limited availability at Aviemore Hostel on the Saturday night, so we need to move quickly. Consequently, those that want to go need to complete an on-line booking here by the start of Explorers on Thursday night. We’ll then be booking the accommodation Friday morning, so there won’t be any opportunities for late booking.
In terms of the cost, please do talk to Andy if you want to spread the cost, as we do appreciate that there’s a slight lack of notice here... As ever, any questions to andy@explorerscout.net.
